Money Coaching
My investing started after I was given a very sizable settlement from Bill’s death when I was 37 years old.
With Art Degree in Graphic Design from an Art University and a checkbook, I didn’t know the difference between a Mutual Fund and a Money Market Fund! I was sent out on my own to invest. I knew nothing!
Close friends who meant well took me to financial advisors. I had no idea what they were talking about. It was only months after Bill was gone. My mind was wrapped in a thick quilt of “grief fog”.
I didn’t know enough to challenge the popular idea that I had to “Get invested immediately, now!”.
And that is my best advice, before investing, educate yourself! At least know the vocabulary of money!
But I learned! Within months, I had Corporate Bonds/ Mutual Funds/ REITs/ ETFs/ individual stocks, both DJIA and Nasdaq/ SPDRs/ Nasdaq IPOs/ Fractionalized Notes on Mortgages (hence the embezzlement!), CDs, etc.
I also learned that all manner of unexpected feelings, experiences and knowledge will arise, including:
* Measureless opportunities for growth and learning
* New unimagined experiences
* Being exposed to envy & jealousy & greed (so painful!)
* Opportunities for philanthropy
* The shady underside of investing
For me the best outcome, besides financially supporting my meditation centers, was the chance for learning and education.
I had both group and private lessons and found out that I learn best one-on-one.
I took lessons in singing, Italian, ballroom and salsa dancing, acting, improv acting, graphic computer classes and anything that interested me.
One fascinating class was at UC Berkeley Extension, “Laughing Your Grief Away”.
